Tomáš Netopil | Conductor

TOMÁŠ NETOPIL studied Violin and conducting among others in Prague, Stockholm and in Aspen in the USA. In 2002, he won the international Sir George Solti conducting competition in Frankfurt. From 2009 to 2012, he was chief conductor of the Orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague. In the 2012/2013 season, he studied Les Contes d'Hoffmann At the Opéra National de Paris, The Magic Flute at the Vlaamse Opera, Prokofjew’s Liebe zu den drei Orangen in Amsterdam and a new production of La Juive in Dresden. On the concert podium he introduces himself, in addition to the orchestras he regularly performs with, with the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and the Vienna Symphony. As a conductor of symphonic works, he has already presented himself with numerous Czech and non- Czech orchestras: among others, the Czech Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Filharmonica della Scala. As an opera conductor, he has seen success in, among others, Salzburg, Munich, Berlin, Genoa, Naples, Turin, Venice and Tokyo. Since 2013/2014, he is the General Music Director of the Essener Philharmonic.

Camilla Nylund | Agathe

Camilla Nylund was born in Vaasa (Finland). She studied at the Salzburger Mozarteum. The artist, who has won numerous competitions, was member of the ensemble of the Staatsoper Hannover between 1995 and 1999 and was member of the ensemble of the Sachsische Staatsoper in Dresden from 1999 to 2001. In the year 2008 she was appointed Sachsische Kammersängerin. Guest appearances for example led her to La Scala, the Bayerische Staatsoper, Finnish National Opera, the Teatro La Fenice, the Teatro Carlo Fenice in Genua, the Vlaamse Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Staatsoper Hamburg, the Königliche
Oper Kopenhagen, the Nederlandse Opera, the ROH Covent Garden, Bayreuth and to the Salzburger Festspiele. 

Her most important roles are Salome, Leonore (Fidelio), Figaro and Capriccio Gräfin, Pamina (Zauberflöte), Fiordiligi, Antonia, Marie (Die verkaufte Braut), Eva (Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Rosalinde (Fledermaus), Lisa (Land des Lächelns), Mimi (La Bohème), Tatjana (Eugen Onegin) Ann Trulove (The Rake’s Progress), Marschallin (Rosenkavalier), Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) and Arabella. She made her debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2005 as Salome and has since then also sung Ariadne, Elsa, Feldmarschallin, Rosalinde, Donna Anna, Sieglinde here.

Daniela Fally | Ännchen

Born in lower austria, soprano Daniela Fally completed her vocal training at the Wiener Musikuniversität after having previously completed theater studies, musical studies and private acting classes. Since the 2009/2010 season, she is an ensemble member of the Wiener Staatsoper, after having been an ensemble member at the Wiener Volksoper for four years. Guest engagements include among others, at the Salzburger Festspielen, the Bregenzer Festspielen, the Opern­festspielen Munich (Zerbinetta 2011 and 2013), at the Bayri­sche Staatsoper Munich (Adele, Zerbinetta), the Staatsoper Hamburg (Fiakermilli, Marie/Fille du régiment 2012 and 2013, Zerbinetta), the Semperoper Dresden (Blonde, Sophie/Rosenkavalier under Christian Thielemann 2012 and 2013), the Opera houses in Zurich (Adele), Düsseldorf (Adele), Liège (Zerbinetta), and Strassburg (Blonde, Sophie/Rosenkavalier), Cologne (Zerbinetta), at the Seefestspielen Mörbisch (Adele) and at the Lyric Opera in Chicago (Adele). At the Wiener Staatsoper, she has sung among others Sophie (Rosenkavalier and Werther), Rosina, Fiakermilli, Ade­le, Oscar, Zerbinetta, and italienische Sängerin (Capriccio).

Andreas Schager | Max

ANDREAS SCHAGER studied at the Universität für Musik in Vienna. He gave his debut performance in 2009 at the Tirole Festival Erl als David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. He has since sung the roles of Florestan (Fidelio), Max (Der Freischütz), Rienzi (Rienzi), Tristan (Tristan und Isolde) and Siegfried in Götterdämmerung as well as in Siegfried. Engagements have taken him to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Berlin State Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, Hamburg State Opera, the Opera in Rome and La Scala Milan. His most recent highlights include Apollo in Daphne in Cleveland and at Carnegie Hall in New York, Tristan in Rome, Gurrelieder in Paris, Erik (Fliegender Holländer) at the Hamburg and Berlin State Opera as well as at the Bayreuth Festival in 2016, Tannhäuser in Antwerp, Siegmund in Leipzig and a new production of Fidelio at the Berlin State Opera. Current projects include Tamino as well as a new production of Parsifal at the Berlin State Opera, Tristan in Rome und Siegfried in Toronto, Leipzig und Wiesbaden. In the seasons 2017-2019 Andreas Schager will take on the title role of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival.

Alan Held | Caspar

The American bass-baritone ALAN HELD was born in Washburn (Illinois) and has performed in all important opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Paris Opera, the Bayerischen Staatsoper, the Milan Scala, the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Hamburgischen Staatsoper, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, the Washington National Opera, the Netherlands Opera and the Théâtre La Monnaie in Brussels. His numerous roles include Wotan in the Ring des Nibelungen, Amfortas in Parsifal, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürn­berg, Scarpia in Tosca, the four villains in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Jochanaan in Salome, Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde, Don Pizzaro in Fidelio, Orest in Elektra, Balstrode in Peter Grimes and the leading roles in Gianni Schicchi, Der fliegende Holländer, Wozzeck and Car­dillac. Recently, he has sung at the Washington Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Bayerischen Staatsoper, in Montreal and in Toronto.  Alan Held can be found on a large number of CD and DVD recordings. Since 2014, he teaches singing at the Wichita State University. In 2001, he gave his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper with the role of Wotan in Das Rheingold and went on to sing the villains in in Hoffmann and Jochanaan.

Albert Dohmen | Ein Eremit

Albert Dohmen was born in Krefeld and can look back onto a long international career. One of the highlights so far was Wozzeck at the Salzburg Easter- and Summer Festivals in 1997.

His repertoire includes e.g. Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Don Pizarro (Fidelio), Amfortas (Parsifal), Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), the title role in Der fliegende Holländer, Escamillo (Carmen), Orest (Elektra), Scarpia (Tosca), Jochanaan (Salome) as well as Wotan/Wanderer in Der Ring des Nibelungen. He sang this part in Geneva, Trieste and Berlin. He is a regular guest at the opera houses of Paris, London, Berlin, Zurich, Amsterdam, Milan, New York as well as at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at the Bayreuther Festspiele.

On the concert sector he has sung his entire fach in nearly all the world´s greatest concert halls. He presented himself to the audience of the Wiener Staatsoper in 2001 as Wotan in Das Rheingold in 2001. Since then he has very successfully performed as Wotan (Die Walküre), Wanderer (Siegfried), Scarpia, Jochanaan, Holländer, Pizarro as well as Tomski and Pluto (Pique Dame), Il Commendatore, Wotan (Rheingold), Méphistophélès (Faust) and Orest.

KS Hans Peter Kammerer | Samiel

Hans Peter Kammerer was born in South Tirol and studied among others, under Walter Berry at the Musikhochschule in Vienna. His first engagements led him to the Vienna Kammeroper and the Bregenz Festivals. Furthermore, he has sung at the Berlin State Opera, La Monnaie in Brussels , the Pfingstfestspielen in Salzburg, the Mozart Festival in Schönbrunn, the Opéra Bastille, the Staatstheater in Stuutgart, Geneva, the opera houses in Barcelona and Lyon as well as the Vienna Volksoper. He gave his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1995 as Dancaïro (Carmen). This was followed by roles among others like Ascanio (Gesualdo), Marullo (Rigoletto), Barbier (Schweigsame Frau), Achter Stammesfürst (Moses und Aron), Graf Dominik (Arabel­la), Spalanzani (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Hauptmann (Eugen Onegin), Haly (L’italiana in Algeri), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Haushofmeister (Ariadne auf Naxos), Papageno, Dr. Falke, Gubetta (Lucrezia Borgia), Kleiner Sträfling (Aus einem Totenhaus), Wagner (Faust) and Mitjuch (Boris Godunow). He has also appeared in children's operas as well as in Zimmermann's White Rose in Parliament.

Adrian Eröd | Ottokar

After his studies at the Musikhochschule in Vienna, where he studied among others under Walter Berry, Adrian Eröd’s career went from the Wiener Kammeroper over the Landestheater in Linz to the Wiener Volksoper and finally the Wiener Staatsoper, which would play a central role alongside his international engagements to his artistic future. Since his debut in 2001 at the Wiener Staatsoper as Mercutio inRoméo et Juliette, Adrian Eröd has sung works like Guglielmo, Beckmesser, Loge, Conte d’Almaviva, Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Dr. Falke, Albert, the leading role in Benjamin Brittens Billy Budd, Olivier (Capriccio) and the male leading role- which was written for him – Jason in Aribert Reimanns Medea. He has also sung, among others at the Teatro La Fenice in Venedig (Harlekin), an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper (Pelléas), an der Oper Frank­furt (Prospero in Adès’ The Tempest), bei den Bayreuther Festspielen und an der Oper Zürich (Beckmesser). Finally, he has sung e.g. at the Tokyo National Opera, the Opéra de Paris and at the Bayreuther Festspielen.

Clemens Unterreiner | Cuno

CLEMENS UNTERREINER was born in Vienna. In 1998 he began his vocal art studies with Hilde Rössel-Majdan, Gottfried Hornik, Helena Lazarska and Wicus Slabbert. Numerous national and international opera and operetta productions as well as lied evenings, oratories and church concerts. Guest soloist in the Große Saal of the Wiener Musikverein, at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Palau de la Musica and other international concert halls. Member of the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper since 2005, where Clemens Unterreiner for example sang Sharpless, Faninal, Donner, Harlekin, Melot, Brétigny, Schtschelkalow, Oberpriester des Apollon(Alceste), Happy (La fanciulla del West), Musiklehrer (Ariadne auf Naxos),Schaunard. Also as guest soloist at the Volksoper Wien he very successfully performed as Papageno or Sharpless. Further engagements led him to the New York Carnegie Hall, the Royal Opera House Copenhagen, to the Strasbourgh Opera, the Salzburger Festspiele, Opera de Nice, Linzer Landestheater, the Oper Chur, the Sommerfestspiele Heidenheim as well as to the Richard Wagner Festival Budapest.

Gabriel Bermúdez | Kilian

Born in Madrid, GABRIEL BERMÚDEZ studied first under his mother, Carmen Rodriguez Aragon, and then for one year under Teresa Berganza. Since the beggining of the 2002/2003 season, Gabriel has been with ensemble of the Zurich Opera House, where amoung many other roles, he has played Figaro, Marcello (La Bohème), Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Nardo (La finta giardiniera), Ping (Turandot), Borilée (Les Boréades), Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus), Plistene (La grotta di Trofonio), Silvio (Pagliacci) and Belcore (L’elisir d’amore). More recently, he has sung as Papageno am Teatro Real Madrid and Figaro at the Staatsoper Hannover, Papageno in Jerez, Oreste (Iphigénie en Tauride) in Oviedo, Ping, Le Mari (Les mammelles de Tirésias) and Silvio at the Liceu Barcelona, Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) in St. Moritz Opera Festiva, Marcello in Valladolid, Harlekin at the Opéra de Paris, Schaunard in Barcelona, Danilo in Dortmund and Mercutio at the Wiener Staatsoper. In 2012, he sang at the Salzburger Festspiele the harlequin in Ariadne auf Naxos and will return in 2014 for further projects. He is also a member since 2013 of the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper and has performed among others, Melot, Sharpless, Marcello, Figaro, Belcore and Heger (Ruskala).     

The young composer Max is due to marry Agathe, but before his wedding he must finish his opera on which he has been working for quite some time. Despite all his efforts, Max is plagued by worries that he will fail to complete the piece and so makes almost no progress. Visions and hallucinations haunt him, the boundaries between dream and reality seem to blur and overlap. Caspar tries to persuade him finally to give in to the hidden and dark creative powers within him and so overcome his inability to write; Caspar’s efforts are finally rewarded. Max first breaks away from Agathe’s world and seeks out the nightmarish Wolf’s Glen. Invoking Samiel, in a kind of creative ecstasy he welcomes his dark creative potential which he now draws on eagerly. Agathe is beset with doubts about her future with Max. Together with Ännchen, she feels hope and longing but also sees fearful visions. However, when Max, pressed from all sides, dares to take the final step and plays the seventh inspiration he came by at the Wolf’s Glen, as if by a miracle it remains intact. Before the assembled company, Max finally admits that he has spent time in the Wolf’s Glen. The punishment imposed by Ottokar is reduced by the seemingly superior Hermit to one trial year in which Max must continue the composition of his opera. Max is once again torn between the bright and dark forces within him ...
