Ingo Metzmacher | Conductor

INGO METZMACHER began his career with the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. From 1997 to 2005 he was General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera, followed by a position as Chief Conductor of the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and from 2007 to 2010 Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. In 2016 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Hanover based multi art festival KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen.  Highlights of recent seasons include new productions of operas by Luigi Nono, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, and Wolfgang Rihm at the Salzburg Festival. Opera engagements have taken him to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Zurich Opera House, La Scala in Milan, Opéra National de Paris, the Dutch National Opera and the Berlin State Opera, and he has given numerous concerts with some of the world’s leading orchestras. At the Wiener Staatsoper Ingo Metzmacher gave his debut in 2009 as the conductor of Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, and has since then returned to conduct Parsifal, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and Jenůfa

Rachel Frenkel | Lea, eine junge Philosophin

RACHEL FRENKEL was born in Israel ​and after her studies was a member of the opera studio in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, where she was heard among others as Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia). In 2011, she gave her debut at the Salzburg Festival in Die Frau ohne Schatten and joined the Ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper in the same year, where she has since then sung Rosina, Zulma, Cherubino, Angelina and Fenena. Further engagements include Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Hamburg Staatsoper, Dorabella and Rosina at the Semperoper Dresden, Ramiro in La finta giardinera at the Glyndebourne Festival, Niklausse/Muse in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Bregenz Festival, Dryade at the Festival in Baden-Baden as well as Cherubino at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Opéra National de Montpellier and Lyric Opera of Chicago. For the 2016/2017 season, concerts are planned with the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the Orchestre National de Lyon and the Symphony Orchestra of the Bayerischen Rundfunks.

Tomasz Konieczny | Peter, ein junger Künstler

Tomasz Konieczy was born in 1972 in Lodz/Poland. At the Film Academy there, he studied acting as well as singing in Warsaw and Dresden. In 1997, he gave his debut in Poznan as Figaro (Nozze di Figaro), two years later in Leipzig, and in 2000/2001 he changed to the Lubecker Theatre. During this time he was committed to St. Gallen, Halle, Chemnitz and Mannheim. From 2002/2003, he became an ensemble member in Mannheim. In 2005, he gave his debut at the Deutschen Oper in Rhein. Further engagements include performances in the Scala, at the Paris Opera, the Semperoper, the Teatro Real, Warsaw, the Bayerischen Staatsoper, Tokyo, Berlin and the Salzburger Festspiele. His roles include among others: Kezal, Orest, Procida, Ramfis, Wotan Wanderer, Pizarro, Großinquisitor, Jochanaan, Osmin, Golaud, Saras­tro, Mandryka, Amfortas, Alberich, Pimen, Marke, Colline, Melitone and Wozzeck. In 2008, he gave his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper as Alberich and also sang here since then Fra Melitone, Alberich (kompletter Ring), Amfortas, Goldhändler, Jochanaan, Wotan, Wanderer, Mandryka, Jack Rance, Don Pizarro and Dreieinigkeitsmoses.  

Thomas Ebenstein | Edgar, Peters alter Schulfreund

THOMAS EBENSTEIN was born in 1979 in Carinthia, and studied vocal arts at the Vienna University of Music under Helena Lazarska. From 2003 to 2012 the tenor was an ensemble member at the Komische Oper Berlin, and since the 2012/2013 season, he has been an ensemble member of the Wiener Staatsoper. Guest appearences have led him among others, to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Semperoper Dresden, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Grand Théatre de Genève, the Theater an der Wien, the Volksoper in Vienna, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Philarmonie in Berlin, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Ruhrtriennale Bochum, the Wiener Festwochen, the Easter Festival in Salzburg, the Salzburg Festival, the Bergen International Festival, and to the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

His repertoire includes such roles as Pedrillo (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Truffaldino (Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen), David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Narraboth (Salome) and Alfred (Die Fledermaus). He made his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2012 and sang, among others, Tanzmeister, Andres, Incroyable, Andrès/Cochenille/Frantz/Pitichinaccio, Guillot de Morfontaine, Valzacchi and Monostatos.

 

Andrea Carroll | Kitty, Edgars Geliebte

ANDREA CARROLL studied at the Manhattan School of Music. She has received numerous awards (for example the Houston Grand Opera´s Ealeanor McCollum Competition, Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition) and has received grants for example from the Shoshana Foundation or the William Matheaus Sullivan Foundation. Most recently she was a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio for two years. There, she sang parts such as Musetta in La Bohème, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Anne Egerman in A Little Night Music, Woglinde in Das Rheingold. At the Utah Opera she sang Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Leila in Les pêcheurs de perles. At the Wolf Trap Opera she performed Corinna in Il viaggio a Reims and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. At the Glimmerglass Opera she was Julie Jordan in Carousel and Rose Segal in Later the Same Evening. Furthermore she sang Rosalba in Florencia en el Amazonas at the Washington National Opera; at the Seattle Opera she performed as Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos. As of September 2015 she is member of the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper. 

Monika Bohinec | Leas Mutter

The mezzo-soprano Monika Bohinec studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. As a student, she was a finalist and award winner of different competitions and a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Foundation and the Hilde Zadek Foundation.

In 2006, she made her debut as Clarissa in Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen at the Slovenian State Opera, where she appeared as Jezibaba in Rusalka, Konchakowna (Fürst Igor), Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and in the title role of Carmen.
In 2009 Monika Bohinec became ensemble member of the Mannheim National Theatre, where she sang Carmen, Sara di Nottingham (Roberto Devereux), Laura and Cieca (La Gioconda), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) and Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera).

In the season 2011/2012 Monika Bohinec became ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera where she sang e.g. Larina, Grimgerde, Marthe, Farzana, Schenkenwirtin, Lola, Mary, Marcellina, Fenena, Ulrica, Suzuki, Margret, Madelon and Erste Norn.

Herbert Lippert | Leas Vater/Der Angler am Ufer

The austrian and former member of the Vienna Boys Choir Herbert Lippert is considered amongst the most important tenors of our times. The first promoters of his voice were Sir Georg Solti and Wolfgang Sawallisch, under whose direction came numerous recordings like Die Schöpfung, Don Giovanni and Die Meister­singer von Nürnberg. In 1997, Herbert Lippert was awardsd a Grammy Award for his interpretation of the role of David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under the direction of Sir Georg Solti. He is connected to the Vienna Philharnomic not only through intensive work in the opera and concert sector, but also through cooperation in the field of operetta, in particular the "degenerate operetta". Some great successes in the Lied field include Lieder evenings with Wolfgang Sawallisch and Maurizio Pollini. He is an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera where made his debut in 1985 in La Traviata, and has sung roles here like Tamino, Matteo, Fla­mand, Don Ottavio, Offizier (Cardillac), Belmonte, Alfred, Froh, Walther von der Vogelweide, Skuratov, Aegisth, Jim Mahoney, Peter Grimes, Erik and Eisenstein. 




 

Alexandru Moisiuc | Peters Vater

ALEXANDRU MOISIUC was born in Bucharest and completed his violin studies at the Enescu University of Music. In 1980 he began his opera singing studies at the Porumbescu Music Academy. In 1984 he made his debut at the Bucharest National Opera in Werther, where he was engaged as soloist. In 1991 he was engaged at the Wiener Kammeroper as Don Giovanni, and went on a tour to Japan and South Korea with the Kammeroper. In 1992 he became 1st soloist at the National Opera in Temesvar, two years later his collaboration with the Wiener Staatsoper began, where he has been a soloist ever since. In 1990 he started working as singing teacher at the Bucharest Music Academy. Performances have led the artist to La Scala in Milan, the Semperoper, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Palais des Beaux-Artes in Brussels, the Herodes Atticus in Athens. His repertoire includes more than 50 of the most important roles of his fach, spanning four centuries and ranging from Monteverdi to Schönberg. 
 

Wolfgang Bankl | Demagoge

KS WOLFGANG BANKL comes from Vienna, received training in Violin and studied singing, Lied and Oratorium as well as opera at the Conservatoire of Vienna. He received initial engagements at the Vienna Kammeroper, the Opera House Kiel and the Tiroler Landestheater. Guest performances led him, among others, to Zurich, Hamburg, Cologne, Barcelona, Salzburg, Strasbourg, the Milan Scala, to the Vienna Festwochen, Bregenz, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Rome and Paris. He recently gave his debut as Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in Dresden under the direction of Christian Thielemann. Together with Norbert Pfafflmeyer, Harald Kollegger and Schmerzhel v. Solchgemut, he established the travelling Kleinfestival Giro d’Arte. Since 1993, he is an ensemble member of the Wiener Staatsoper and has since then sung here among others: Papageno, Alberich (Rheingold), Doktor (Wozzeck), Klingsor, Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Harašta (Schlaues Füchslein), Frank, Graf Waldner, Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Hauptmann (Boris Godunow), Ochs, Geisterbote (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Tierbändiger/Athlet (Lulu), Ringender (Die Jakobsleiter), Zirkusdirektor (Der Riese vom Steinfeld), La Roche, Leporello, Dreieinigkeitsmoses (Mahagonny), Swallow (Peter Grimes). He has been awarded the title "Österreichischer Kammersänger".

Donna Ellen | Peters Mutter

DONNA ELLEN comes from Canada and studied singing at the Wilfrid Laurier University of her hometown. For two seasons, she sang at the Canada Opera Piccola under the care of Leopold Simoneau and Pierette Alarie, before she changed to the Opernstudio in Zurich. In1987, she became engaged with the Landestheater Linz, where she sang roles like the Queen of the Night, Blonde, and Zer­lina and sang in the premiere of Balduin Sulzers Proteus. Previous performances include among others, in Stuttgart, Geneva, Berlin, Bad Ischl, in the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. In 2004, she gave her debut at the Volksoper. Her debut at the Wiener Staatsoper, where she is an honorary ensemble member, was in 2003 as Helmwige. Since then, she has sang among others, Marzellina (Barbiere di Siviglia), Axinja (Lady Macbeth von Mzensk), Leitmetzerin (Rosenkavalier), Annina (Traviata), Curra (Forza del destino), Brünnhilde (Nibelungenring for children), Königin (Traumfresserchen), Berta (Pünktchen und Anton), Marcellina (Nozze di Figaro), Fekluša (Kátja Kabanová), Kar­tenaufschlägerin (Arabella), Aufseherin (Elektra), and Dirne (Aus einem Totenhaus), Giovanna (Rigoletto).  
 

Johannes Maria Staud has received composition commissions from the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as from the Cleveland Orchestra and Salzburg Festival. He has also had his operas premièred at the Munich Biennale and the Lucerne Festival. Together with librettist Durs Grünbein he has now written a political opera for the Wiener Staatsoper, making reference to the general shift to the right in Europe. At the centre of the action is the newly enamoured couple Peter and Lea, who set off on a journey down a river, – to the very heart of Europe, a continent recently torn apart again...
