Overall this dark and romantic opera, Wagner's fourth opera, is centred around the damned figure of the Flying Dutchman who is cursed with the inability to die. However, this is one of those works that, in contrast to the three previous operas, was given permission by its creator to be performed in Bayreuth.

In "Die Fledermaus" the Waltz King created a masterpiece in the genre of operetta that has never been transcended since. It features brilliant music combined with a bitingly comic plot, but without being cheaply sentimental!

Arabella was the last collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The central theme of this lyrical comedy is the true love of two fundamentally different couples. This is the true love that unites us forever "in suffering and joy, in grief and forgiveness."
